The Raisin Babies Jazz Band was founded by Dave Ruffner in 1985. It is a part of the Fresno High School music department. Fresno High School was founded in 1886. The school has produced such notable figures such as William Saroyan, Mike Connors, Tom Seaver, Cher, Dick Contino, and Sacramento’s own Roger Krum. Dixieland has been played at Fresno High School off and on for many years.

The Raisin Babies has performed over the years at many festivals including the Sacramento Jubilee, the Pismo Beach Mardi Gras, the High Mountains Jazz Festival in Sisters, OR, the Medford Jazz Festival, the Modesto Jazz Festival, Jazzaffair in Three Rivers, CA, Chilliwack Jazz Festival, the Coos Bay Clambake Jazz Festival, Fresno Mardi Gras and others, Satchmo Summerfest in New Orleans. The band also plays outside of the festival circuit for parties, events, and other celebrations.

The group specializes in the performance of traditional jazz, brass band, small ensemble swing and New Orleans Mardi Gras style. The group is very versatile and some members in the group double on several instruments.
